The Best Anything

Monster
A psychological thriller, Monster is the best thing I have ever seen ever ever ever. Forever.
Dr. Tenma, a brain surgeon, has it all. He's a genius, he's moving up in his career, and he's engaged to hospital director's hot daughter. But then he refuses to operate on the mayor, instead saving a young boy who had shown up first. So the mayor dies and Dr. Tenma's life turns to shit; somebody else gets the promotion, his fiancee dumps him, and the boy he saved is still in a coma. Then all the jerks making that happen suddenly die. And then, well, it just keeps getting better from there. Monster is the most intricate, brilliant, and just amazing thing I have ever laid eyes upon. Go watch it.
In the interest of full disclosure, I should warn you that it moves a bit slowly. By which I mean that it is 74 episodes long. It is very worth it, though, and everything is important somehow, but not in a confusing Lost way.

Psychological

Death Note
Light Yagami, a genius high-school student, finds a notebook filled with instructions. The important one: "the human whose name is written in this note shall die". As it happens, it's real. Light decides to use his newfound powers for good evil something. He starts off trying to rid the world of evil, but things kinda go downhill from there. Meanwhile, the world's best detective, L, is trying to find the person killing all the world's criminals. Thus begins one of the most intellectual games of cat and mouse ever.
Death Note is pretty awesome, though the last arc flouders a fair bit. Moreover, the anime completely botches the ending. If you watch it, I recommend also reading the last few chapters.

Kino's Journey (Kino no Tabi)
A hauntingly beautiful set of vignettes concerning the titular Kinoís travels. If you've read Invisible Cities by Italo Calvino, itís vaguely like that.
